IN THE ANCIENT two-fold division of the Celtic calendar, Halloween marked the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, a celebration of the night when the dead could return to the land of the living. The night was also celebrated around the ancient world by such unconnected cultures as the Egyptians and the pre-Spanish Mexicans. The Landmark on the Oregon Coast in Yachats, OR, has had more recent such celebrations including one just the other night, Oct. 31, 2006. And thus, the Bird, a soaring creature signifying the rebirth of the world. |
The ancient world was amply represented in the crowd, the Devil and the Wizard included, while on stage the modern world was brought forth through a dizzying performance from Sassy, a three-woman musical revue from Portland, led by the inexhaustible Taska Barlow. The dancers packed the floor, including the Devil and the Wizard, a couple of Jesters, an Oak Tree, and several Witches. |
And walking the Earth is none other than the scariest Skel of the night and our friend the Alchemist, busy turning gold into beer. |
Diamonds and gold gazing from the bar stool at a world of fantasy. |
And speaking of fantasy, what better salute to the modern products of our ancient past, Popeye the Sailor Man and the Cat in the Hat. |
Your genial hosts thank you all, until another cycle passes and the rites of All Hallow's Eve are ready to be performed again.
P.S. Here are some pics from The LANDMARK's 2007 Halloween Party...
