THE TERRY EVANS BAND

The golden sounds of soul and blues from a life-long practitioner

One of the true greats, as soulful a voice as you'll ever hear. The Evans touch has left a lasting impression on Landmark music fans in a way none other has in the seven years we've been presenting shows. This has been a great year for Terry, teaming up with Dutch folk star Hans Theessinks for a CD called "Visions" that netted the pair a nomination for the 2009 Acoustic Album of the Year by the Blues Music Foundation. Terry's two previous releases were equally powerful. "Fire in the Feeling" brought the Iraq war right to the dinner table and "Mississippi Magic" was nominated for Best Soul Blues Album of the Year at the WC Handy Blues Music Awards 2002. Evans and Bobby King released two recordings for Rounder Records in 1988 and 1990. He also has performed and recorded with Ry Cooder, including a lead vocal role in the movie soundtrack for Crossroads.

He's been writing songs since he was 13. Richard Parris, the lead guitar, has a background that includes a cover band on the Gulf Coast and a recording studio in Tulsa. The two bumped into each other on the Oregon Coast and are making their first appearance at the Landmark.

JIM SUHLER & MONKEY BEAT

George Thorogood's lead guitar brings in a stunning rock/blues band for some real fireworks

Suhler's take-no-prisoners attitude has powered George Thorogood and the Destroyers for nine years. Suhler has often been included in "Top Ten Guitarists" in the United States lists in several music publications. He and Monkey Beat are in the Northwest for a starring slot at the Portland Waterfront Blues Fest and decided to drift on down the coast for a little taste of the Landmark. Wow! We are awfully glad to have him and can't wait for this Texas rocker to show his stuff. He's just released his third CD, "Tijuana Bible," which includes unique takes on Elvin Bishop's "Drunken Hearted Boy," Rory Gallagher's "I Could've Had Religion" and AC/DC's "Up To My Neck in You".

Keyboard driven jazz and blues with a European base

A cool duo featuring the keyboard skills of Terry "Fingerprince" Reniex, a native of France who has performed around the globe, including a memorable Stevie Wonder tribute in the Mercadante in Naples, one of the oldest theaters in the world. He recently moved to Eugene where he studied music and has performed with many different people and acts. He's joined by Carlito Sway, who started in Orlando, Florida, where he developed his Afro-Cuban percussion style. He was the host of New York City loft happenings before heading to Eugene for a more down-style scene.

ROBIN ROGERS

Nominated for best female blues vocalist of the year in the U.S.

In the 60s, American youth rediscovered the blues. At the same time Robin Rogers, a teenage runaway, was living the blues. She slept in parks, under picnic tables and in abandoned cars, addicted to drugs and alcohol. She was also becomng a lifelong music addict, playing guitar and making her way with her songs. By 1979 her life had turned around, she made her first record in a studio in Miami and has performed full time ever since, based in North Carolina since 1990. Robin signed with Blind Pig Records in 2008, and made "Treat Me Right," a critically-acclaimed CD that includes  "Color-Blind Angel," a moving account of the life and death of white civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo, who was assassinated by the KKK in 1965. The song took second place in the blues category of the 2007 International Songwriters Competition. That honor was topped by her nomination for a national Blues Music Association award for best female vocalist.

BOTTOMS UP BLUES GANG

From St. Louis - this hard-working duo knows how to play the river blues

Here is a blues duo -- singer-percussionist Kari Liston and guitarist-harmonica player Jeremy Segel-Moss -- that manages to get the full band sound, especially when a few locals join them on stage. Last year they put on a special Landmark show that left the crowd cheering. Kari's voice is so unique she can carry the night and Jeremy is a perfect side man, generous and fulfilling. In the last five years The Gang has averaged 275 shows a year, released three albums, and twice won the Peoples Choice Award for best acoustic blues in St. Louis. They've been enjoying the Frenchmen Street scene in New Orleans a lot lately and always stop by on their way down the West Coast.

PARISH GAP

Eclectic art rock from Fleetwood Mac to the Dixie Chicks

Tom Wright on guitar, harmonica, and vocals, and Bob Rause on keyboards, bass, and vocals are the heart of this band. They have been an inseperable musical duo since they met in high school in the Chicago area. The "Art Rock" style developed as a reaction to the simple bleats of punk. Jefferson Airplane and the Dead both had their "art rock" phases of soaring song development and the jam bands have the current hold on the style. Tom and Bob are joined by Catherine Wright, a former member of choirs and acapella groups who is now the lead singer. Joe Montgomery on drums rounds out the group, which has been drawing crowds in the Corvallis-Salem area.

ROCKIN' JAKE

Five-time winner of best blues harp in New Orleans

Think Paul Butterfield meets the Fabulous Thunderbirds, toss in an Emerile-sized portion of cajun spice and you've got the Jakester, last sighted in a fancy new Bourbon Street club in New Orleans. Jake moved from Connecticut to New Orleans in 1990 and lived there until forcibly removed by the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina. Always a lover of the road, Jake continues to tour from his new base in St. Louis, traveling across the county to bring his sound to big and small venues. It's a sound developed in a South Louisiana gumbo, mixed up with Marva Wright, Mem Shannon, Coco Robicheaux, Little Freddie King, Tommy Ridgley, Eddie Bo and other local legends. The five-time winner of Offbeat Magazine's coveted "Best of the Beat" award for best harmonica player.
