WALKER T/PAPA SOUL!

100% pure Delta stomp

A meeting of a finger picking bluesman with a lightning-fast washboard player isn't something you see in these parts too often. But here comes a Eugene blues legend joined up with the man behind Papa's Soul Food Kitchen. Walker T. Ryan has taken a hiatus from performing for the last couple of years, doing bookings, lessons, making a living. But Papa Soul was too much for a bluesman like Walker to resist. Don't miss this one, it will be a unique show.

WHISKEY ROBBERS/CATFIGHT

Power pop, rock and progressive from Newport

We try at the Landmark to get local bands, which have been few and far between recently. But Casey, Kevin and Seamus have come up with a new version of the Whiskey Robbers, a little less intense than the last time around. There is lots of originality here, with some covers thrown in to keep the crowd honest. Also on the bill is Catfight, another rocking band, this time in the vein of White Stripes and Veruca Salt.

J. R. SIMS & TEXAS SPECIAL

From SRV to Hendrix - those rippin' blues from the south

J.R. is the consummate blues guitar player who can recreate the sound of the tradition as well as anyone. Stevie Ray rewrote the Texas blues of the 40s and 50s into the high-flying guitar styles that last today. J.R. was there when Stevie Ray invented this stuff and J.R. brings it right into the Yachats living room for your listening pleasure.

CAMP 3

Punk musings from the underbelly of Corvallis

This rock trio includes leader/singer/writer Adam Nilsson, drummer Marcus Looze and bassist Dominic Maze and plays a variety of punk sounds that bring in rockabilly, raggae and some cold hard Johnny Cash. The philosophy found in the lyrics and the sound goes a certain distance toward an understanding of the theory of random chaos. These players are not mathematicians, however, just hard-working blasters on a journey around the universe.

THE SUMMIT UNDERGROUND

Mike Riley brings in the blues from up the mountains

Riley is a consistent and generous blues player who has lived the life all his life. This band is 15 years old, a testament to the mellow style and the depth of appreciation its members have for the music. The blues lives because musicians live the blues. Mike is backed by Vegas and LA session harp player Kooch Kucera and Bongo Bob Pettit on drums.

HOOKAH STEW

Garage, soul, powerpop -- John Michael Young can play them all -- and does

Hookah has evolved. And like all evolution, the progress is sometimes hard to see until ... a CD -- "Hits from the Hookah," puts the Stew in a new niche, that of tribal hook masters, rattling the bones of the 80s. John Michael Young formed this band over 10 years ago and gave it a crash course of Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Aquarium Release and the Five Fingers of Funk. Now playing on the van stereo: Oingo Boingo, Nirvana, Run DMC, The Subways, Anti-Flag, Kings of Leon, Mac Dre, Fat Boys, Rollins band, Weezer, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jd Hardy, Human Rights, Van Halen. The riff is hotter than it was; the energy is jacking up. Evolution at work.

PAPAW'S BLUE JELLY BAND

Rock and blues in the Mississippi style, from Corvallis

This is a band that has been playing together for over a decade and it shows in the tightness of the covers and the quality of the originals. Jonathan Carroll is a New Yorker guitarist playing counter to David Bryant, who hails from Clarksdale, Mississippi. Somehow the mesh is no mess and out comes everything from Hendrix's "Little Wing" to Buddy Guy's "Heavy Love."

THE INSOMNIACS

Blast off with the jump blues from award-winning Portland outfit

The Insomniacs are one of the hottest bands on the West Coast. They walked all over the 2007 Muddy awards in Portland with six nominations and the prize for "Best Contemporary Act" for 2007. They were nominated for a Blues Music WC Handy award in the Best New Artist category for the 2007 release, "Left Coast Blues" and made it to No. 5 on the blues charts with "Crime Scene." The band lays down a groove layered with taste, soul, and an authentic style melded with a traditional blend of jump blues and roots rock. The band is fronted by Vyasa Dodson, 25, one of the hottest young players to emerge from the Portland scene.

PILAR FRENCH INTENTION

Funk, blues and some up close vamping from Portland veteran

Pilar can be loungy, smoky and silky, bluesy, but slightly askew. She's bringing a five piece band, so get ready for a lot of variety. Her history runs through influences such as Marlene Dietrich, Nicolette Larson, Steely Dan, Maria Muldaur and Dave Matthews. French has lived in Portland for 13 years, playing in numerous bands including Soul Patrol Mission, Swerve, Ginger Lovely, Guilty Pleasures and One Hit Wonders. The vibrant Pilar French Intention has made its mark at various Pacific Northwest venues including the Waterfront Blues Festival, the Bite of Oregon, Robin Hood Festival, Crystal Ballroom and Doug Fir.

THE DIMES

Some of the best indie rock the Northwest has to offer

The Dimes have been getting a lot of good press these days, with a great feature in SPIN magazine, a piece on NPR and a bushel basket of positive reviews for the CD "The Silent Generation." Frontman Johnny Clay keeps on writing, finishing some new songs in just the past couple of months, including one called "Celia's Garden," based on the paintings of Childe Hassam, a 19th Century impressionist from Boston, who spent his summers in Maine, in Celia Thaxter's garden. Johnny wrote an earlier song about Winslow Homer. He's into it.

ELEPHANT REVIVAL

Folk string band influenced by Celtic, Gypsy, funk, rock, reggae, oldtime, and bluegrass

From the bluegrass mountains of Colorado, these five 20-something songwriters and multi-instrumentalists joined together in 2006. Since then, Dan Rodriguez, Bonnie Paine, Dango Rose, Sage T. Cook and Bridget Law have been part of what they call "a neo-acoustic gyptic revival" from the Rockies to the Ozarks. They are aimed West these days on tour from Cali to Seattle. The revival is totally original yet pays homage to Little Feat, The Band, Leftover Salmon, Tha Musemeant, Billie Holiday, Bonnie's mom, Taj Mahal, Bob Dylan, Randy Crouch, Holy Modal Rounders, traditional Celtic and Scottish song-craft, Colorado bluegrass, roots reggae and mountain hip-hop.

KARAOKE with JOY

Every Thursday night

A Japanese drummer invented the karaoke machine in 1971 and it spread to the far corners of the earth by the end of the 1990s. The inventor failed to patent his invention, however, and lost out on the millions to a Filipino rival. At The Landmark, the entertainment has come and gone and come and gone. It is currently under the direction of Joy, who loves the music and has rounded up lots of oldies and newies for you to sing, so step up.
